Popular for boating & fishing, the reservoir is used for irrigation of the citrus and sugarcane plantations at Tshaneni, in the Swaziland lowveld. Boating is restricted to members and guests; go to the Sand River Dam Yacht Club near Tshaneni.

The lake is about 1 h drive from Manzini north of Siteki, on the Komati River and covers an area of 710 ha.

The best – the only – place to stay when visiting Sand River Dam is the charming Mananga Country Lodge. Excellent birding and fishing are not the only outstanding features of this 21 000 ha game reserve. There’s a 9-hole golf course, and some well marked hiking & biking trails. A choice of accommodation includes the Guest House, a Bush Camp and the Houseboat.
The delightful Guesthouse has 3 accommodation options with various configurations: family rooms, double and single bed options. 2 of the cottages have self-catering facilities available if the entire house is booked. All Guesthouse rooms are en-suite and have air conditioners, tea and coffee facilities, fridges & TV. Maximum occupancy 40 guests.
The gorgeous, well shaded Bushcamp is comprised of one en-suite cottage with 2 beds, a large shelter with 4 beds (can sleep up to 10 people) and plenty of space for tents. The Shelter has an outside Braai area, washing up area, fridge, tables & chairs, cutlery and electricity. Fans, a gas plate and a kettle are also provided for guests. Minimum 2 night stay. Extra mattresses and linens are available upon request. The Bushcamp is not shared accommodation – guests must book the whole camp.
The Houseboat sleeps 4 onboard with space for another 2 in the Private Campsite near the Jetty. Ablution facilities are available on the Houseboat as well as in the Campsite. Private Braai facilities are in the Campsite. Price includes use of rowing boat & fishing rods. Minimum 2 night stay.
